The nearest village, Turcifal, has a charming old quarter and hosts local festivals and celebrations. Surrounded by fertile soil, it is renowned for its exceptional white and red wines. Nearby is Torres Vedras, the region’s lively commercial center, famous for its hilltop fortresses—the Lines of Torres—built by the Duke of Wellington to defend against Napoleon’s troops. Venture a bit further to discover a wealth of fascinating historic towns, including Óbidos, Mafra, and Sintra, Portugal’s jewel and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

While the official national language is Portuguese, you’ll find many people who speak English, French, and Spanish. The local currency is the euro, and banks are generally open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 3pm. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. Tourists traveling with electronics should note that the electric system uses 230/400 volts with the European-style two-pin sockets.

Local shopping hours are generally 9 or 10am to 7pm, with a lunch break around 1-3pm. Shops are generally closed on Sundays, except mornings in December for holiday shopping. Large shopping centers featuring international brands generally have longer hours, a brand new one is located just in Torres Vedras, while local markets and fairs vary by region.
