Praia D'El Rey Golf Course
"This is the kind of landscape we architects try to create, but at Praia D'El Rey it's all here, naturally. Now it's my responsibility to protect it", he says modestly.
It is certainly one of the most picturesque layouts in Europe, set in extensive grounds of pine forest and undulating dunes with spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlenga Islands beyond. The course is visually stunning and tremendously exciting to play. Because of the endless variations of the terrain you'll never play it the same. Cabell has designed the course to be the complete golfing challenge with bold deep bunkers, undulating greens, and natural sand border areas contrasting sharply with the lush green fairways.
Cabell feels very strongly that the course must be fun for everyone to play. Praia D'El Rey, rated 13th best course in Europe by Golf World magazine, has become one of the major golfing destinations in Europe. Not surprisingly, Praia D'El Rey has become a favourite destination for both private and sponsored events.
Bom Sucesso Golf Course
An 18-hole Championship Golf course stretches along the length of the resort shaping the housing areas, the Hotel & Spa and the other leisure facilities. The proximity of the sea and Óbidos lagoon, not to mention the golf course itself, afford each part of the resort lots fantastic views which benefit from the extension and the natural beauty of the surroundings.
The golf course, designed by the world-renowned architect Donald Steel opened in October 2008. It is a Par 72 golf course with an area exceeding 600 thousand sqm; the first nine holes are played on a level part of the terrain while the second nine are located on uneven terrain, and are therefore quite spectacular.
BOM SUCESSO has signed a number of reciprocity agreements between the BOM SUCESSO golf course and other Portuguese golf clubs, spread across the country. Bom Sucesso belongs to IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators), assuring with this membership accuracy and quality to its public and clients.
Royal Obidos
This championship course is the lastest addition on Portugal's Silver Coast and the last masterpiece of Seve Ballesteros. The course is 7100 yards from the back tees. There is a challenging mixture of hazards with several of the holes having spectacular views of the Obidos Lagoon. The feature hole is the 5th which is a par5 and 520m long withthe approach into a large undulating green which has water on three sides. This course is a must play while at Praia Del Rey. Currently the course is set in a vast 'lunar' landscape as the surrounding greenery has been prepared ready for the development of villas and townhouses around the golf course.
Good clubhouse and pro-shop.
Golden Eagle Golf Course
The Golden Eagle (Quinta de Briçal) is north, near Rio Maior, 55 kms north of Lisbon.
This championship course, designed by Rocky Roquemore of Atlanta, USA, occupies almost the double of an ordinary course. It is also unique because of the beautiful natural setting and the calm that reigns, the space available and the golden eagles that circle over the property in the late afternoons. You will find pine trees, eucalyptus, mimosas, camellias, hydrangeas and a lot of other eyecatching plants bordering the fairways.
The fairway grass, Penn Eagle, is not often seen in Europe. Greens have Penn Cross and are quite sizeable but not too undulated. Bunkers are plentiful (87 altogether!) and, in many cases, very large. Seven water hazards really only affect the "wide" golfer.
The restaurant provides very good meals with excellent wines, most of which are produced on the property. "Today's special" is likely to be a Portuguese speciality (which is well worth trying) but there is always a selection of international dishes.
Campo Real Golf Course
Campo Real Golfe & Natureza is a challenging course designed by Donald Steel which opened 28 May 2005. The course at Campo Real has been designed to appear as natural as possible. This was considered to be important to reflect the incredibly beautiful surroundings. The hills all around provide a stunning backdrop to many holes and give the golfer a feeling of escape. The out of bounds parts of the course will be maintained as wild and natural areas and much of the existing vegetation has been retained for this purpose. In this way the flora and fauna of the site are encouraged and allowed to flourish.
As a result of the significant change of level of the site, there are many exciting shots to play at Campo Real. This change of level also results in the course being a difficult, although not impossible, course to walk. However, a full set of cart paths are provided so that golfers can enjoy their round using a buggy. The green surfaces also contain a significant amount of undulation. The greens are built to USGA specifiation to provide optimum conditions for growth and quick recovery after rain. Effective drainage and irrigation systems have been installed. There are relatively few bunkers on the course due to the strong natural characteristics of the site.
Penha Longa Golf Course
Penha Longa is a fabulous eighteen-hole course situated in Sintra, only twenty minutes from Lisbon. It forms part of the Protected Landscape Area of Sintra and Cascais.
Robert Trent Jones II, the architect of the course, designed it to best take account of the steeply sloping terrain and excellent views of the surrounding landscape, across the mountains to the sea beyond. This means that the first three holes and the final three are laid out in a valley wooded with pines and studded with granite outcrops. The 6th to the 13th holes, meanwhile, have been built on a hill offering extensive views over the region.
Its championship characteristics - as well as its excellent level of maintenance - contributed to its being selected, just two years after its inauguration, to host the Portuguese Open Championship. It was unanimously voted by golf professionals as one of the best courses on the European Circuit. In 1995 Penha Longa inaugurated a new nine hole course - Mosteiro.
Quinta Da Marinha Golf Course (Oitavos)
Oitavos Golf, set in Quinta da Marinha, lies within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. It is set among pine woods and reforested dunes, in an area of great natural beauty. Being a seaside golf course, the ocean view is present all the time, although some of the more fantastic scenery come from the Sintra mountains and Cabo da Roca the Europe's most western point in Europe, seen from the 9, 10, 11 and 14 holes.
The layout has been carefully crafted by one of the greatest golf architects of our times, ex-president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Arthur Hills. Hills has maintained and preserved the unique characteristics of the land, creating a 6.303 meters, par 71 golf course. The sustainability of the resources is the prior objective, and because of that the flora and fauna peculiar to the region are strictly protected, with some areas closed to people and machines.
Quinta da Marinha Oitavos Golf is the 1st Golf Course in Europe and the 2nd in the World to be recognized as a Certified Signature Sanctuary - Gold. It is already set as one of the best golf courses in Europe, where a non stress round of golf can be played all year round.
Troia Golf Course
Troia Golf Championship Course, designed by the famous American golf architect Robert Trent Jones Senior, is a spectacular links, and one of the most fascinating golf challenges in Portugal.
The usual approach to the Troia Golf Championship Course is straight over the Estuary of the Sado River - a pleasant short ferry ride from Setubal to the Peninsula of Troia, a region of great natural beauty near the Atlantic Ocean.
The greens are small with naturally shaped defensive bunkers and hummocks, while the fairways are narrow and hemmed in by sandy dunes and pine trees, providing a genuine test of skill for the lower handicap golfers together with enjoyment for the more modest players. The front nine has a run of beautiful sea holes and Trent Jones, who was never lost for words when asked to praise his own work, selected the 3rd hole at Troia, for his dream eclectic course.
Troia Golf Championship Course offers you a comfortable and welcoming Clubhouse, constructed in a rustic style, with a set of first class facilities services: golf reception, pro-shop, bar, restaurant and a large balcony to the 18th Green and also a excellent Driving Range with two putting-greens and one chipping and bunker practice area.
Quinta Do Peru Golf Course
With the Arrabida mountains as its backdrop, the Quinta do Peru Golf Course offers amateurs a pleasant game, whilst also presenting a challenge for professionals. It was voted amongst the top 10 courses in Portugal in the biennial poll organised by the European Golf magazine. With its many trees and wild flowers, the course provides a varied start, for the first three holes consist of a par 5, a 386-metre par 4 and a 186-metre par 3. Amongst the first nine holes, attention is drawn to the short 8th hole, with a lake in front of its green.
The next nine holes are even more difficult. Number 12 is a par 4 which, although not very long, has a lake running beside the fairway and down to the green. Then comes what is probably the most difficult test on the course: hole 16, a 200-metre par 3, where one needs to play over a lake to reach the green.
The course´s recognised quality has led to its hosting several events from the European ChallengeTour.
The friendly family atmosphere makes this club one of the most highly regarded in Portuguese golf, its diversified course offering excellent views over the surrounding countryside.
